Detailed below are just some of the applications and utilities that we find useful and use on a regular basis. Many of these are either inexpensive or free (with the option to upgrade to a commercial version with additional features). 7-Zip
A free, open source file archiver that not only offers a high compression ratio in it's proprietary 7z format but also supports many other archive formats including ZIP, RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH and TAR. The software authors claim that for ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides a compression ratio that is 2-10% better than the ratio provided by PKZip and WinZip.
Audacity
A free, open source application for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, Linux and various other operating systems.
CCleaner
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system (traces of your online activities such as your Internet history), allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.
CD Burner XP
A free application for burning CDs and DVDs (including Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs) It also includes the feature to burn and create ISO images.
Dropbox
Sync your files automatically to your computers and the web with Dropbox which is the easiest way to share and store your files online. Photos (which can be viewed in a gallery), documents and files, can be easily shared if required.
E Text Editor
A new text editor for Windows with powerful editing features and quite a few unique abilities, one of which is that it supports TextMate bundles. Textmate
is the award winning editor for the Mac OS X, that has revolutionized the way text editors work.
Evernote
An all-encompassing note-keeping application that you can access from just about everywhere, Evernote allows you to create, upload, and save images, text, and audio, and if there's text contained within the image, Evernote's optical character recognition (OCR) engine will identify it and make it searchable.
Filezilla
FileZilla is a free, fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface. It is open source software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License
Firefox
Our web browser of choice. There are thousands of add-ons you can download to enhance Firefox. Here are just some of our favourites:
- ColorZilla provides an advanced eyedropper, colour picker, page zoomer and other useful goodies.
- Integrating Firebug with Firefox puts a wealth of development tools at your fingertips that allow you to edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML and JavaScript live in any web page.
- If you need to take screenshots of web pages then take a look at FireShot. It provides a set of editing and annotation tools, allowing users to modify captures and insert text and graphical annotations.
- A great tool for web developers, IE Tab allows you to easily see how your web page is displayed in either Firefox or IE with just a single click.
- If you're designing grid based layouts, then Gridfox is for you; it overlays a grid on any website allowing you to create the exact grid you designed your layout around.
- The Web Developer toolbar adds a menu and a toolbar to Firefox that contains various useful web developer tools.
- Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, allows you to undo closed tabs and windows and much, much more while Colorful Tabs colours every tab in a different colour, making them easier to distinguish.
- GTDInbox is an application that provides improved GTD and inbox management for GMail, turning incoming emails into prioritisable tasks, categorising historic emails and files into projects, leverages social relationships, aides team work and speeds up your daily use of Gmail.
Flashget
A free download manager that boasts the highest amount of users on the internet. This is, of course, used in conjunction with the Flashgot extension for Firefox.
Foxit Reader
A free PDF document viewer and printer from Foxit Software that is notable for its short load time and small file size.
JR Media Center
JR Media Center is designed to make it easy to organise, find and play your music, photo and video digital files and to connect to hardware devices (iPod, TV, TiVo etc); all from a single software program. Also offered is Media Jukebox, which is music only, fully featured and is free.
KeePass Password Safe
A free, open source password manager to help you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. What this means is that you only have to remember one master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).
Launchy
If you have heard Mac owners talking about Quicksilver or admired Vista's built-in search engine, then you need Launchy. It is a free, open source, Windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu and even the icons on your desktop.
My Phone Explorer
Connect your Sony Ericsson phone to your PC via cable, bluetooth or infrared using this very useful application and you'll be surprised how quickly and efficiently you can manage your phone.
Features:
- Addressbook - with direct sync to Outlook, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes and Thunderbird
- Organizer with calendar view and direct sync to Outlook, Sunbird, Thunderbird, Rainlendar, Lotus Notes, Google and net shared calendars (WebDAV, FTP, local)
- SMS - send, archive, export, import, archive messages
- File browser with cache system to minimize data transfer
- Set phone clock based on atomic time

MyPhoneExplorer is compatible with all phones from Sony Ericsson with a PC interface except P800i, P900i and P910i.
Notepad++
A free text editor (and Notepad replacement) for Windows that supports several programming languages.
Open Office
Primarily sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Open Office runs on Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and various other operating systems. It is a free (for any purpose), open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases etc. It can also read and write files from other common office software packages.
Paint.NET
Originally designed to be a free replacement for MS Paint, Paint.Net has evolved into a powerful tool for photo and image manipulation with support for layers and special effects.
Primo PDF
A free tool for creating PDFs; comprising a user-friendly interface that enables printing to PDF from virtually any Windows application.
PureText
Have you ever wanted to copy text from a web page or other document and then wanted to paste it as plain text into another application without getting all the formatting from the original source? PureText, a free Windows application, makes this simple by adding a new Windows hot-key (default is WINDOWS+V) that allows you to paste text to any application without formatting. It can also remove formatting from the text that is currently on the clipboard.
Rocket Dock
An animated, alpha blended application launcher that provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization.
Screen Calipers
A unique on-screen measurement tool from Iconico that let you measure anything on your computer screen with ultimate accuracy.
Skype
With Skype you can talk, chat or make video calls for nothing. If you purchase credit, you can also make local, long distance and international telephone calls. While there are many Skype plugins that allow you to record calls, most come with a price or limitations on use. Call Graph is free, there are no limitations and it's straightforward to use.
SyncBack
A file backup and synchronization program from 2BrightSparks that is free for personal, educational, charity, government and commercial use.
Sublime Text
A fully customisable text editor for Windows with powerful editing features, Textmate-style macros and snippets and a unique mini-map feature that's like seeing your code from 10,000 feet. Oh, and it looks really cool too!
TeraCopy
Integrating with Windows Explorer, TeraCopy from Code Sector is a compact program designed to copy and move files faster between file or folder locations. Amongst it's many features, it allows you to pause file and resume transfers. It also shows detals of failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only the problem files. It's free for home use.
Thunderbird
A free email client from Mozilla, the people that brought you Firefox. Version 3 has recently been released and it is better then ever. Get it!

TrueCrypt
This free open-source disk encryption software creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a real disk, allowing you to encrypt an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB flash drive, automatically and transparently in real time.
WinHex
An IT security tool that can be used to recover deleted files or lost data from hard drives with corrupt file systems or from digital camera cards etc. WinHex is an hexadecimal, disk and RAM editor that can be used to inspect and edit all kinds of files.
Xobni
A free Outlook plug-in that helps you organize your inbox. Features include lightning fast email search, phone numbers extracted from emails, contact details appear in the sidebar and conversations are threaded.
